It is a very important thing to teach your children about finances as early as possible. Many adults today know nothing about retirement plans and some don’t even think about their future and how they will live once they are not working anymore.
Money does not grow on trees, how many time did you hear that growing up? Everyone needs to know early that the bank is not a never ending money pit and credit cards are not the answer. Using cash to by what you need will certainly keep you from living beyond your means.
Being able to say NO to certain purchases is a good lesson to learn. Do you just want it or do you really need it? Can you live without it or if you want it that much, save for it. Saving is important too. One day, something will happen, an emergency of some sort will come up and money will be needed to take care of it. Children should also know that prices of things are not the same everywhere. Comparison shopping is the way to get your money’s worth. Live withing a budget that you made based on the money you make and to stick to it. Educate them on how credit works and let them know it costs money to use that little piece of plastic.
